Specializing in thoracic surgery, Dr. Kato graduated from Tokyo Medical University and completed graduate studies at the university. He has studied at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Dr. Kato is the pioneer of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for early-stage lung cancer and is recognized as a leading expert in this field. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Tokyo Medical University, as well as the university’s Vice President, and currently leads the Clinical Proteome Center. He has also served as President of the International Society of Cytology and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). Additionally, Dr. Kato has held leadership positions in multiple Japanese medical societies and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Japan Society of Clinical Cytology Award in 1986. His contributions to medical research and technology have made a significant impact both in Japan and internationally.

Dr. Kato has served as a specialist for several government agencies, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the Japanese Medical Association, and other governmental organizations.
