A medical scientist specializing in thoracic surgery, he graduated from Tokyo Medical University and completed its graduate school before studying abroad at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. At Tokyo Medical University, he served as the Chair Professor of the First Department of Surgery, Vice President, and Director of the Clinical Proteomics Center. Currently, he holds the title of Professor Emeritus at the university. Additionally, he serves as the Honorary Director of Niiza Shiki Central General Hospital.
He has held numerous leadership positions, including President and Chairman of the Japan Lung Cancer Society, the Japan Society for Laser Medicine, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), among others. In recognition of his contributions, he has received numerous awards, such as the Goldblatt Award from the International Academy of Cytology in 1998 and The “von Tappeiner” Medal from the International Photodynamic Association in 2005.
Since September 2021, he has been serving as the President of the Japan Society of Medical Science, contributing to the advancement of medicine.
